Junior Doubles Tournament
Saturday 19th October saw the first doubles tournament for junior members. Twenty-four players took part, but alas only three of the competitors were girls. Special thanks go to Adam Dziamarski who came in at the very last minute to make up the numbers. Round robin matches were played in different age groups. Congratulations to the eventual winners Tristan Buckley and Ed Barker, James Barker and Alex Barker. Next year we hope that the girls won't be so shy.
Wefri Cup
This tournament was introduced for the first time in the autumn for members who play on Wednesday mornings and/or Friday afternoons (hence the name). Partners were drawn out of a hat and it was a simple knock out format. Congratulations to Leslie Thurlow and Brenda White who beat Judy Stone and Biddy Denvir in the final.
If there is sufficient interest, next year's tournament will be a 'round robin' with several matches to play before a final. The draw will be made early in the New Year. For more information contact Peter or sign up on the list on the pavilion notice board.
Club Tournament
Despite inclement weather all matches were completed as scheduled on Saturday 30th November. Congratulations to all the finalists. The results were:
- Men's Singles Nick Slim beat Rob Jones
- Ladies' Singles Frances Seeney beat Lauren Brice
- Men's Doubles Colin Smith & Darren Smith beat Rob Jones & Lee Sharpe
- Ladies' Doubles Becky Hallet & Sara Holyer beat Hilary Burke & Carolyn Perry
- Mixed Doubles Sara Holyer & Nick Purchase beat Hilary Burke & Tony Carver
Team News
Mixed results were achieved in the summer season with the men's A and B teams being relegated, and the men's C team gaining promotion after winning division 5. This leaves the teams in exactly the same league divisions (2, 3, and 4) for the start of 2003 as two years ago.
In the ladies' leagues the A team was relegated, the B team gained promotion after winning their division, and the C team remained where they were. They will start the 2003 summer leagues with the A and B teams in division 2, and the C team in division 5.
Winter floodlit league results will be published in the next newsletter.
As we have often said, we are always looking for more people who would be interested in playing league tennis, this year more so than ever. In the men's teams we need to strengthen the squads playing in the A and B teams so third team players will be moving up a step. Consequently new players are needed for the C team. Similarly the ladies' teams need a greater squad of players in order to be able to put out strong teams throughout the season, covering for injuries, holidays and general unavailability.
If you are interested in playing please contact Colin and Carol Smith at: teams@(nospam)bredon-tennis.org.uk.
Weekend TournamentsAs I was sat contemplating past events, I began to feel that 'something' was missing - then it hit me - we haven't had an 'orgy' for sometime now and it has become an itch that must be scratched!
For those shy members who have never played in a weekend orgy, it really is a question of whether or not you have the stamina and are available for both Saturday and Sunday. If so, then you may enter! You will play two (or more) rounds each day, so that a title may be won in two days, thereby cutting out all the faffing about that goes on during other tournaments. The events will be run over three weekends:
- 1st & 2nd February - Men's Singles & Ladies' Doubles
- 1st & 2nd March Ladies' - Singles & Men's Doubles
- 5th & 6th April - Mixed Doubles
These events will take place whatever the weather, unless there is rain of biblical proportions, and even then I would expect you to float around the court. As usual the entry fee will be £1 per person per event, to be paid when the attached entry form is returned. Rules are the same as traditional tournaments. Entry forms need to be returned at least two weeks before each event. Times of play will be posted in the pavilion at least one week before each event.
Please return entry forms and money to Jackie Woodward as soon as possible and let battle commence!
New Year Party
There will be a party at Bredon Village Hall on Saturday 25th January to which all members are invited. If you haven't bought your tickets yet, there are still some available from committee members at £5 a head. You are asked to provide a contribution for the bring and share supper. Don't forget your money for the bar and raffle. There will be a disco, and the trophies for the winning U11 junior team, Club Tournament and the Wefri Cup will be presented.
Annual Quiz
Copies of this year's Quiz (car models) to while away the winter months, are now available at £1 from committee members.
